Infectious diseases like HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis and TB

HIV (human immuno deficiency virus) is a virus that damages the cells in your immune system and weakens ability to fight everyday infections and disease. AIDS (acquired immune deficiency syndrome) is the name used to describe a number of potentially life-threatening infections and illnesses that happen when immune system has been severely damaged by the HIV virus.

While AIDS cannot be transmitted from 1 person to another, the HIV virus can.

Tuberculosis (TB)

Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious illness that mainly affects the lungs. The cause tuberculosis is a type of bacteria. Tuberculosis can spread when a person with the illness coughs, sneezes. These can put tiny droplets with the germs into the air, another person breathing in the droplets and the germs enter lungs. Tuberculosis spreads easily where people gather in crowds or where people live in crowded conditions. People with HIV/AIDS and other people with weakened immune systems have a higher risk of catching tuberculosis than people with typical immune systems.

Hepatitis

Hepatitis B is a serious liver infection caused by the hepatitis B virus (HBV). For most people, hepatitis B is short term, also called acute, and lasts less than six months. But for others, the infection becomes chronic, meaning it lasts more than six months. Having chronic hepatitis B increases your risk of developing liver failure, liver cancer or cirrhosis — a condition that permanently scars the liver.

Most adults with hepatitis B recover fully, even if their symptoms are severe. Infants and children are more likely to develop a long-lasting hepatitis B infection. This is known as a chronic infection.
